A New Single Cross Waxy Corn Hybrid of High Yielding, “Dumechal"

  A new single cross hybrid, “Dumechal”, is a white waxy corn(Zea mays L.) developed by the Maize Experiment Station(MES) of Gangwondo Agricultural Research and Extension Services(GARES) in Hongcheon in 1999.  “Dumechal” was made by crossing two inbred lines, the seed parent, HW1, and the pollen parent, KW7, which were developed by MES and the National Crop Experiment Station(NCES) respectively. Both of them came from Korean local varieties and were advanced to 7 generations by ear-to-row method. The silking date is a week later than that of check hybrid, Chalok 1.  Ear length(18.8㎝) was longer than that(16.3㎝) of Chalok 1.  Plant and ear heights were higher than those of Chalok 1. “Dumechal” also had greater lodging resistance. The grain qualities and panel test of "Dumechal" showed intermediate to Chalok 1 and Chalok 2. Number of fresh ear and ear weight were 6,164 ears/10a and 1,018㎏/10a, respectively, in Gangwon regional yield trial. In the nationally performed regional yield trial, "Dumechal" was 1% higher in ear number than Chalok 1 and 4% higher than Chalok 2.  As for ear weight, "Dumechal" was 19% higher than Chalok 1 and 30% higher than Chalok 2.
